An affogato al caffè or affogato coffee in English means drowned in coffee. It’s a coffee-based recipe, or even a dessert, from Italian gastronomy. Affogato coffee is made with vanilla ice cream drowned in espresso.
The Italian affogato coffee was quickly adopted for its sweet and gourmet flavors and the contrast between the heat of the coffee and the cold of the ice cream. Here is the recipe to make affogato coffee!
Recipe for affogato coffee
To prepare an affogato coffee start by making a good coffee! If you have an espresso machine, make an espresso. If not, make a filter coffee or use an Italian coffee maker. The more intense and full-bodied it is, the more striking the contrast with the sweetness of the vanilla ice cream. If you like it, sweeten your coffee, but be careful with the dosage, the ice cream is already sweet.
Put a scoop of ice cream in a large cup and cover it with hot coffee for a delicious homemade affogato coffee!
Some use instant coffee instead of espresso, it’s up to you, if you like Nescafé why not!
Variations of the affogato coffee
For a change, add cocoa powder, cinnamon, or roasted almond slivers to the ice cream. Honey, chocolate, melted caramel or whipped cream also go very well with coffee affogato. Here are two variations of the affogato coffee recipe.
